Fluxgate magnetometry is a fast and efficient method of assessing the archaeological potential of an area.
The instrument measures small variations within the Earth’s magnetic field known as ‘anomalies’, the strength and form of which are often indicative of the origin of the buried deposit. Being lightweight and hand held it can be used in areas of all sizes; the instrument requires no contact with the ground so this type of survey has a minimal impact on the ground surface.
It is particularly adept at identifying:
- Areas of Past Habitation – Ditches – Pits
- Kilns – Ovens – Metal working areas
- Ferrous Metal
- Utilities – Pipes – Field Drains
