Caerwent, South Wales

GSB and Time Team visited Caerwent (Venta Silurum), one of the best preserved Roman towns in Britain. Here we tried out a relatively new piece of equipment, the Foerster Ferex magnetometer and the GPR results were amazing!

What we found

As much of the town has been previously excavated Time Team concentrated on 2 areas; Insula I and XIV.

A remarkably clear plan of a villa was located within Insula I in both the magnetometer and GPR data, the latter showing internal walls and rooms (see left).

Results from Insula XIV show a complex of wall foundations likely to be associated with shops.
