Piercebridge, Co Durham

GSB and Time Team visited the roman fort of Piercebridge or Vinovium in County Durham. Part of the eastern section of the fort was excavated in antiquity and is on permanent public display. But it is what lies to the east of the fort that interested Time Team. Aerial photographs of the site reveal parch marks which can also be seen by clicking the Google Earth link to the right.

Not only did we have fields to survey but also the River Tees! Which was quite something to witness!

Mag results mag interpretation What we found

The 'mag' survey showed a wealth of archaeological anomalies associated with the Roman fort and settlement (vicus) providing a plan of the defences, buildings and roads.

An area south of the river was also investigated and the potential for prehistoric activity can be seen as a ring ditch and enclosure.

The GPR survey over the River Tees was carried out in order to locate bridge footings. Unfortunately the results are less successful than the survey over the buildings, in which internal detail was recorded.
